Rule no 1 when you get into an apartment change the default bulbs. They are mostly incandescent bulbs and they cost ultra cheap but will cost you a lot on the electricity bill and not only that they burn out very very easily.
Go to Home Depot/walmart/target to buy brand new bulbs. Let me explain the kind of bulbs that you get.
If you are on a ultra budget then buy the CFL bulbs but again they are costlier on your electricty and break easily.
Go for LED bulbs and the reasons are simple
1) They are 5 times cheaper on over your CFL bulbs in terms of electrictiy consumption
2) LED bulbs like Philips Slim Style dont get heated up like normal bulbs
3) They dont break when they fall on the floor.
4) They last real long like 20 years or 25000 hours, So its a buy and forget it. I personally have been using LED bulbs for 4 years and none of them have gone bad till date.

Yes its pricey- around $8 a bulb but it will repay itself in 3 years due to low power consumption and remember it lasts real long.
