Every now and then my friends call me up to ask - Dude whats the cheapest but quality calling service to India.
till 2012 my answer was Vonage. but thats changed in the recent times as the call rates continue to drop.
Option 1 ) If your call is mostly to your home back in India and if they already have a existing wifi at home back in India then I would go with what I have at home back in India
Its called - OOMA

Its called - OOMA
so this is how it works.
1) one time payment of $100
2) Monthly payment of around $4 - based on your local state taxes
that is all you pay for lifelong free unlimited calls to USA.
EXAMPLE - This is how I have it for my family - We have OOMA bought in USA and sent to India and since my home has broadband(minimum of 512kbps required), we have it connected it to our router - absolutely no router setup required. Connect a landline phone to OOMA and thats it you are all done.
Now my folks back home can call me or anyone in USA whenever they want with no minutes limit. And since they will also have a USA number you can call them whenever they want and their landline connected to OOMA will ring as a normal BSNL phone would.
So for $4 a month my parents and myself can call each other whenever we want with no additional cost. And bonus, they can call any USA number they want like your siblings/cousins/relatives all for $4
this works out the best if more than 75% of your calls is to your parents and in -laws. Have one in each home and with $8 a month you and your spouse can talk all you guys wat and for them they not only can they call you but your other siblings or cousins.
Option 2) - If you are a casual caller and call lot of people like relatives and friends then choose one of the below options based on the minutes you choose.
My recommendations are
1)Rebtel - For $10 a month you get unlimited Minutes. Rebtel is one of the leading providers of international calling. they have amazing apps for all the smartphones and you can also call from your home landline or office phone.
2) Skype - Anther reliable service to call India for real cheap. For $8.99/month you get 800 min/month
so i.e. - 0.80¢/min. skype too has amazing apps for all the smartphones and just like Rebtel you can configure Indian contact numbers on their app to call through registered Land-line or other phones.
